Here is the story behind this fascinating image.
I count Ritsu as a good friend since we met at Williams Group. Ritsu is a really hip avant guard musician and artist. She was contacted by a good friend who is a stylist who was in search of a "distinguished looking older man with a white beard." Ritsu contacted me and invited me to sit for this image, even though I explained that I was truly an extinguished older man.
I drove over to Grand Haven and was the fourth person to be styled for a portrait taken by Chris Clor, who lives in Britiain and has a place here, too. Visit his website and see his fascinating work. The stylist put some makeup on me and dressed me for the occasion. I posed like the gentleman in Rembrandt's 1652 portrait. Chris sat me in a basic chair as you can see in the picture below. Lights were moved around while I sat still for about 20 minutes. Everything around me in the final shot was placed there by Chris during the few days after the shoot.
Jan was recently reading a novel by Lucy Costigan, Winter Solstice. Here is a quote from page 48.
"This reminds me of a Rembrandt." He surveyed the scene with his dark luminous eyes. "Everything is in shadow, except for the tiny flicker of light in the corner. Rembrandt's palette was always fairly scant: burt umber, yellow ochre, cadmium red, with a touch of lemon yellow. No one can beat the Dutch masters for atmospherics. The perfect scene for a quiet December drink!"
Photoshop? Rembrandt would be amazed.
What a cool gift this was. I really appreciate Ritsu, the stylist and Chris. Thanks for encouraging me to do something like this. It was fun!
